Nauman Smith Prepares to Celebrate 150 Years – Unveils New Logo and Website

As the firm approaches 150 years in practice in 2021, the firm renewed its commitment to providing quality legal work, practical solutions and personal attention. This year, despite the challenges of a pandemic, Nauman Smith completed a lengthy strategic planning process designed to help the firm prepare for the evolving legal needs of businesses, individuals and nonprofit organizations in south central Pennsylvania. This process included reaffirming its core values:

  • Legal excellence and practical solutions to client problems
  • Communication, teamwork and respect for everyone
  • Integrity, fairness and accountability in every facet of our business
  • Appreciation for diversity, including in thought and background
  • Engagement of staff and attorneys in the future growth and success of the Firm
  • Commitment to growth and development for everyone on our team

Nauman Smith also refreshed the firm’s logo and designed a new website. While we recognize 150 years is a remarkable milestone, we measure our success by the success of our clients.  We have a lot more to share about the firm’s 150th Anniversary celebration so watch for updates in the coming months.

A Long History of Landmark Cases

The oldest law firm in Harrisburg, Nauman Smith was founded in 1871 to primarily serve the region’s railroad industry, which it continues to serve today, in addition to many other industries.  Our firm’s rich history includes some significant cases dating back to 1879 when founder, Lyman Gilbert, successfully defended Major Marcus Reno in a Court of Inquiry concerning his conduct at the Battle of Little Big Horn.  The two became friends while Reno was living in Harrisburg. Between 1930 and 1950, the firm handled several landmark cases impacting our region’s rail industry in the areas of safety and employment relations.  Over the last 30 years, Nauman Smith has developed a niche around the Pennsylvania Open Records and Sunshine Acts, representing the media, individuals and businesses trying to obtain access to public documents and proceedings.  This has resulted in Craig Staudenmaier’s recognition among The Best Lawyers in America for the last eight years.
