(Harrisburg, PA) - Spencer G. Nauman Jr., senior partner in the Harrisburg law firm of Nauman, Smith, Shissler, and Hall LLP, and member of the Harrisburg Academy Class of 1951 received the McCormick Medal for dedicated leadership and voluntary lifelong service to the Academy during the school's annual Founders Day celebration at the John Harris/Simon Cameron Mansion, 219 S. Front St. in Harrisburg.

The McCormick Medal is named in honor of Vance C. McCormick, a former Academy student, board member and president, as well as prominent Harrisburg civic leader and national adviser to President Woodrow Wilson.

"I'm honored to follow Marilynn Abrams as a recipient of the McCormick Medal," Nauman said. "I'm also honored to be receiving this award because Vance McCormick was my step-grandfather."

Nauman Smith is the oldest law firm in Harrisburg. Harrisburg Mayor Stephen Reed recently honored Spencer Nauman and his firm for their rich history and continual effort to remain on the forefront of society's legal issues.

Nauman attended the former Seiler School and Harrisburg Academy before graduating from St. Paul's School, Concord, NH, and Princeton University. He earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Nauman has been advising businesses and nonprofits in the Harrisburg area for 43 years, specializing in tax, trust, estate and corporate law.

An active volunteer in the Harrisburg community, he is currently president of the L.B. Smith Educational Foundation. He formerly was a member of the Board of Managers of Harrisburg Hospital, director of the American Red Cross, Capital Region Chapter, president of the Board of Trustees of Harrisburg Academy, and now serves the Academy Board as an emeritus trustee.

As president of the Academy Board, Nauman moved the school toward a greater degree of financial growth and stability. During his tenure, the facility expanded significantly with the addition of the Louis Lehrman Gymnasium and new science labs, classrooms and a soccer field. An increase in enrollment allowed the school to offer two rather than one class of every grade in Lower School.

Nauman previously received the Academy's Alumnus of the Year award in recognition of his service to the school.

Recently, Nauman was instrumental in helping the Harrisburg Academy Board of Trustees establish the Harrisburg Academy Foundation. The Board of Directors of the Academy Foundation will be working in partnership with The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (formerly The Greater Harrisburg Foundation) for management of the school's endowment funds.

"Spencer Nauman is well deserving of the medal," said Janie Brownold, who preceded Nauman as president of the Academy Board of Trustees. "His family has been loyal to the Academy for many years."

Nauman says that his step-grandfather, Vance C. McCormick would be pleased with the Harrisburg Academy's progress. "We're back to a school that is big enough to do the job of educating, and do it well, as part of the greater Harrisburg community. The leadership of the school has forward-looking ideas that are also practical. I'm proud of my longstanding association with the school," he said.
